Securing Affordable Auto Insurance After An Accident

An accident on your driving record will typically lead to a cost increase in your auto insurance. However, this factor does not mean that your auto insurance has to become unaffordable. Even with a claim on your record, there are steps you can take to secure affordable auto insurance

Be Patient

One of the most important things for you to do is to be patient. An accident is just that, something that you did not intend to happen. Even better, an accident will remain on your record, but it will not have the same effect on your risk level indefinitely. Generally, after a period, the accident will no longer have little, if any, bearing on your insurance cost.

Enroll in a Driving Course

Enroll in a driving course if you were at fault in the accident. Defensive driving courses can teach you a lot about being a safer driver, even if you are experienced. To get credit for this course, you must complete a program approved by your insurance company and provide documentation of your completion. Once the information is received, you should be offered a discount.

Review Coverage

If you have been on auto-renew for a few years, now might be a great time to review your coverage, as you might be able to make some cost-saving changes. For example, maybe you had rental car reimbursement on the policy because you and your spouse worked outside the home. However, if you both work remotely now, you can drop this coverage since you can use your spouse's car in case of an issue.

Increase Deductible

Generally, the lower your deductible, the more you will pay for auto insurance coverage. If you have a very low deductible, increasing the amount, even if temporarily, can help you lower your premium. However, do not raise the deductible until you have the money set aside to cover the cost in the event you need to file a claim.

Bundle Policies

If you have multiple insurance policies but you have them spread across different providers, you can make your post-accident auto insurance more affordable by bundling your policy. Bundling policies means choosing one insurance company for all your insurance needs, such as homeowners, auto, and boat insurance. You will likely be granted a multi-policy discount in exchange for your business.

An accident does not have to mean unaffordable. Follow these tips to secure the coverage you need at an affordable price.
